High Quality alternatives forfitness chains
Many fitness centres have already switched to non-copyright music for group exercise sessions.
Australia’s largest chain, Fitness First, has adopted new copyright-free Les Mills products, reporting that customers have been “highly supportive” of the move.
The Sydney-based Plus Fitness chain also plans to change. Owner, John Fuller, says the non-copyright alternative is high quality music that will not attract PPCA fees.
“The real losers are our group fitness instructors,” John says. “It is a job of passion with small financial rewards. They will be forced to purchase new copyright free music, contributing to costs associated with being a group fitness instructor.
”He knows of some centres which have chosen not to offer group exercise or have changed to a gym only business model.
“Fortunately the industry has been prepared for this decision and we have a wide rangeof non-copyright music available to us. I believe it will have little impact on Plus Fitness members.”
John says PPCA has “shot itself in the foot” because the steep hikes will force fitness centres to use alternatives, to the detriment of the recording artists whom PPCA represents.
